Current Assignment in the College of Education and Human Sciences:
Associate Professor; I teach each of the following courses: "School and Society" (TEAC 331 Syllabus); "Schooling in Demographically Transitioning Communities: Special Topics in Culture and Schooling" (TEAC 840D); "Effecting High School Improvement" (TEAC 496/896); "Teaching ELLs in the Content Areas", "Challenges and Opportunities: Introduction to the Carnegie Program for the Educational Doctorate," and "Education Policy and Practice" (TEAC 902). I am a member of the Faculty Leadership in Writing Initiative and a faculty affiliate of the Center for Children, Youth, Families, and Schools and the Latino Research Initiative.
Philosophy Statement: Whether in the U.S., Mexico, or somewhere else, I believe schooling can and should be a vehicle of social equality and improvement, but that it is not intrinsically so. It is the task of research, particularly the study of policy implementation, to illuminate why and when schools advance the public good and when they fall short.
