The Jack and Mary Von Gillern Family Fund in Honor of Kathleen Troop Ireland
The Office of International Affairs is pleased to announce a new program of scholarships for UNL students who intend to study abroad. This fund will provide valuable assistance to our students while helping UNL achieve its goal to give more students an international experience.
Candidates shall be regularly enrolled students at UNL and enrolled in an accredited study abroad program through the Office of International Affairs. Preference shall be given to students in the UNL Honors Program and in the program of Interior Design in the College of Architecture. The scholarships shall be awarded in the donors’ names—“Jack & Mary Von Gillern Family Scholarship.
We encourage all eligible undergraduate students to apply by October 15th, 2009 for participation in study abroad programs that take place spring semester 2010. The deadline for the receipt of applications for programs of study abroad that take place during the summer and fall semester 2010 is March 15th . The Office of International Affairs will review applications and select the more meritorious for funding. Each recipient of a scholarship will be expected to send a brief report about his or her experience abroad within 30 days after return. The number of credit hours earned in a program of study abroad may vary.
UNL students may present their applications to the Office of International Affairs, 420 University Terrace, in Lincoln, NE 68588-0682. Study in Toledo, Spain Teacher Education in a Multicultural Context Spring Semester 2010
Earn 15 UNL credits as you gain proficiency in Spanish and learn how to teach in a multicultural environment.
Spanish Language & Culture
Beginning in early January, participate in a four-week intensive orientation and course in Spanish language and culture. The classes in language are designed to promote progress from intermediate levels to proficiency at advanced level in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Emphasis is placed on current social, economic and political events and realities in today’s Spain. In addition, you have the opportunity to prepare for and earn a Diploma de Español como una Lengua Extranjera (DELE). For the course in Spanish culture and civiliza¬tion, the imperial city of Toledo becomes a “classroom” (“Toledo mi aula”) offering a vivid experience of the historical and multicultural realities of Spain’s Christian, Arabic and Jewish communities: 6 credits (SPAN 321, 398).
Teacher Education
The Harold E. Spencer Program in Teacher Education in a Multicultural Context is a four- month exchange program with the Es¬cuela de Magisterio - Universidad Castilla-La Mancha in Toledo. you attend courses at the Escuela de Magisterio, participate in a practicum in the public schools of Toledo, and participate in tutorials focused on peda¬gogy in the classroom and the educational system in Spain. 9 credit hours at the 300 level in Spanish Teacher Education (initially transferred as SPAN 399).

Located 70 km from Madrid, Toledo is a fortified city with an explosive mix of me¬dieval culture and architecture, Toledo has been recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a city full of history and art and at the same time, modern and lively.
